How CO-HO Brings the 7 Pillars of the Circular Economy to Life
In the face of today’s housing and climate crises, building differently is no longer a choice — it’s a necessity. With CO-HO, we are reimagining collective living through modular, circular, and community-driven solutions.
But what does that mean in practice? Let’s look at how CO-HO aligns with the 7 Pillars of the Circular Economy7 Pillars of the Circular Economy defined by the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform.
7 Pillars of Circular Economy
1. Materials
CO-HO gives a second life to shipping containers or existing modules and integrates secondary raw materials from the foundations to the finishing, like reclaimed bio-sourced cladding using polycarbonate, wood and steel infrastructure.... Our modules are designed for disassembly, relocation, and reuse ... turning potential waste into long-lasting value.
2. Energy
Prefabrication reduces energy consumption on-site, while smart insulation and renewable options like solar panels lower long-term energy use. Shared infrastructures: kitchens, laundries or mobility hubs, further reduce duplication and waste.
3. Water
We integrate rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling while ensuring efficient appliances in shared facilities. The result: significantly lower per capita water consumption without compromising comfort.
4. Biodiversity
By focusing on urban infill and brownfield regeneration, CO-HO reduces land pressure and urban sprawl. Our projects can include rooftop green gardens, urban farms and biodiversity corridors, reconnecting people with nature in the heart of the city.
5. Society & Culture
CO-HO is more than housing, it’s a community. Shared spaces like coworking areas, event hubs, work out spaces, gardens... foster inclusion, cultural exchange, and a stronger social fabric. We design for people, not just for buildings. We contribute to the revitalization of (new) districts in mutation.
6. Health & Wellbeing
Wellbeing is central to our approach. CO-HO modules are built with non-toxic, eco-friendly materials, and designed to enhance quality of life. From communal gardens to wellness spaces, we promote healthier lifestyles and stronger connections.
7. Value
Circularity is not just ecological. It’s economic and social. CO-HO creates triple value:
Economic: resilient investment models and affordable housing.
Social: inclusive communities and collective services.
Environmental: reduced waste, energy, and land use.
By embedding circularity across all seven pillars, CO-HO offers a holistic solution for the future of living... one that is affordable, adaptable, and regenerative.
